Since 1938, Heidelberg Distributing has relied on its Associates to make our company great. We’ll spotlight some of the hardworking men and women who not only excel in their everyday jobs but also go above-and-beyond in exemplifying Heidelberg’s core values.
Rita Varner– Assistant Administrative Manger Ohio Valley
Working together and winning together as a team is what each of Heidelberg’s nine markets and facilities seek to achieve every day. If there’s a breakdown in the teamwork at any level, in any department, the winning doesn’t happen.
Ohio Valley Assistant Administrative Manager Rita Varner is part of the eight-person OV admin team. All eight Associates are focused on working together, doing their part and making sure everything they touch is done correctly. “We all work as a team, from customer service to accounts payable and receivable, to driver check-in and our front desk,” says Rita. ““If one of us has an issue, it affects what everyone else is doing. We all make sure that we have each other’s backs.”
Rita has been at OV and with the Heidelberg family for 13 years. In her time with the company, she has held nearly every position on the admin team. “I started in customer service, went to driver check-in, back to customer service, then accounts payable and am currently assistant admin manager,” says Rita. “If we are ever down a person, I can fill in since I have probably held the position at some point!”
Helping out her fellow Associates in the admin department is just one example of Rita’s teamwork. When there was an accounts receivable spot open on the admin team for nearly six months, Rita helped pick up the slack, going back and forth between her position and the AR vacancy. “I’ll fill in wherever and whenever I have to,” Rita says. “It’s all part of being on a team and making sure everything gets done.”
“In all of the time that Rita has been with the company, she has gained great knowledge of how all the moving parts fit together,” says Marie Koehler, Ohio Valley Administrative Manager. “She is able and willing to jump into any position that is needed. She looks outside the box to make sure that everything flows the way it is supposed to.”
The family atmosphere is what has made the company a great place for her to work for the past 13 years. “If you have issues, if you need to take off work, you have someone who will help out no questions asked,” says Rita. “The ownership group is fantastic as well. If you work for a company where you can go up and talk with the owners, that comfort level is amazing.”
Out of the office, Rita is usually in full family mode spending time with her husband, 17-year-old step-daughter and 11-year-son. Motorcross is a big family activity with both kids riding and racing. When she isn’t at a motorcross track or at the gym or taking her son to the park, Rita’s usually in the bleachers cheering on her son at a football or a basketball game.
