JOE MATERNI – COLUMBUS BEER SALES PROFESSIONAL
Joe Materni has always had a passion for beer, especially imported beer. As an international relations major at Bowling Green State University, he had an opportunity that would shape his career moving forward. Joe got the opportunity to study abroad in Austria, which raised his love of beer to a new level.
He spent a semester studying at the University of Salzburg and while there got to try some great local beer. “Getting an opportunity to experience the culture and the beer while I was in Austria elevated my interest and love for beer even more,” says Joe. “When I got back to Ohio, I never really thought about turning my love of beer into a career, but after I completed my degree I heard about a merchandising position with Heidelberg in Toledo. I did some research on the position, applied and got the job.”
Joe began working as a merchandiser in Heidelberg’s Toledo Beer Division in September of 2012. After learning the industry and spending about a year in the Toledo market, he applied for a position as a beer sales professional with Heidelberg Columbus. He got the job and headed to Ohio’s capitol and has been there ever since.
“I really enjoy the interaction with my customers,” says Joe. “One of the most rewarding parts of my job is working with them and helping them grow their business through our catalog. I get to work with them one and one and can show them how we can have a positive impact on their business.”
In addition to working one-on-one with his customers, Joe has also had the opportunity to work with some of Heidelberg’s beer supplier partners. “The craft beer brewers and beer industry people that I have had the chance to meet really take pride in what they do and their passion for their product and the industry is really contagious,” said Joe. “The care that these breweries put into their products is amazing. You can taste the care that goes into each beer and the history and experience in the recipes they produce."
When he is not working with his customers and helping to quench the thirst of Columbus area beer lovers, in addition to cooking, Joe and his wife Katie enjoy outdoor activities. Traveling, hiking, biking and skiing are just a few of the outdoor sports that keep them busy.
